Debbie Hennes’ goal in painting portraits is to create a timeless painting that is a work of art in its own right. Upon her first visit Debbie spends time talking with the client and together they look through her reference portfolio of portraits. This is both an educational process and a help to the client in deciding on the direction he or she wants for the portrait. It also helps the artist understand the client’s likes, desires, and needs.
Once the client and artist agree on the direction of the painting, Debbie then uses her camera to record various poses and expressions( observing her subject's natural gestures and characteristics), while exploring a variety of settings and qualities of light she feels best express her subject. This usually requires scheduling one or two mornings or afternoons, one to two hours each depending on the ages and number of figures to be photographed.
In the following week, Debbie carefully reviews the photographs and will send the client a cd, or email a selection of recommended photographs if a meeting in person is not possible. When necessary a sketch or color study may be included. This gives the client a good idea of the artist’s direction in the creative process and gives opportunity for input before Debbie begins the portrait.
After the client approves the composition, Debbie can begin work on the creating the portrait.
Debbie has found that this approach of working closely with the client during the creative process gives a sense of involvement and eliminates surprises when the painting is unveiled.
Upon delivery the client will have the option of requesting minor corrections and changes. The entire process of creating the portrait, from first sitting (or photo session) to delivery usually requires one to ten months.
